APPLYING FOR FRANKE BOOK MANUSCRIPT WORKSHOP GRANTS
DATES
The Spring deadline for applications is 11:59pm on Friday, April 24, 2026. Proposals will be vetted by the Franke’s Governing Board at the end of the Spring quarter. At this Spring meeting, proposals will be considered for funding for the academic years 2026-27 and 2027-28.
Proposals for Franke Grants for Book Manuscript Workshops are accepted during Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters every year. In general, we recommend applying at least two quarters in advance of the project start date.
CONTENTS
Applications should include all information that will enable members of the Franke Board to evaluate the intention and reach of your Book Manuscript Workshop. Please complete the Proposal Cover and Signature Sheet (available in the Supporting Documents section). A proposal of about 1,000 words is usually sufficient. Please include the title and a brief abstract of your book manuscript; the questions that your Workshop plans to address and how the respective expertise of the invited external faculty colleagues will address these questions; and an account of why this timing is a good moment in the workflow of your manuscript to hold the Workshop, as well as a tentative budget including an itemized estimate of costs.
Guidelines for the budget include:
Three honoraria for an overall total of $1,500 @$500 for each participant;
Transportation and lodging for three participants not to exceed $2,500;
Lunch and dinner not to exceed $500.
Staffing expenses for logistics (media use and room setup), drawing on funds in any of the options above.
Please note: Any staffing expenses necessary to support workshop logistics, including technology support (e.g., use of a media cabinet, wifi access for your guests) and room reconfiguration, must be included within the proposed budget allocation above. Applicants should plan for on-site assistance, whether through departmental staff or the hire of a graduate student, to support the event’s logistical and technical needs.
The Franke Institute is eager to help in the application process, and happy to look at your draft proposal prior to the final application.
Please contact Richard Neer (Director) at rtneer@uchicago.edu, or Margot Browning (Associate Director) at mb31@uchicago.edu, if you have questions about the preparation of proposals.
Please submit your proposal to the Franke Institute’s Call for Proposals for Franke Book Manuscript Workshops on the University’s InfoReady platform. To log in to the University’s secure InfoReady portal, please use your CNetID and password.
